Our Commitment to the Food Pantry

A proverb is a simple and concrete saying, popularly known and repeated, that expresses a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity.

...There but for the grace of God go I
  1. A recognition that others' misfortune could be one's own, if it weren't for the blessing/kindness/luck bestowed by fate or the Divine.
  2. Man's fate is in God's hands.
  3. More generally, our fate is not entirely in our own hands.
Many people are not aware that the Colfax Ward has made a pledge to the local Food Pantry that we will provide assistance and volunteers when specific needs are phoned in to our Ward Humanitarian Specialist (Patti Wilkinson).  What we loosely refer to as the "Food Pantry" is officially a service of the Council on Aging and Human Services, located in Colfax and serving Whitman County. They are a private, non-profit, public-benefit organization committed to enhancing lives and supporting communities with transportation and nutrition services.

Many times it is not possible for members of our ward to assist, either with time or with food donations. But as your time and budgets do allow, please remember our friends and neighbors in need and consider giving to the Food Pantry.

The Three Tenets of Relief Society

“We’re all at different places on the path. But we can work together to help each other “press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, have a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men.” —Carole M. Stephens, First Counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency
The Relief Society has been established by our Heavenly Father to organize, teach, and inspire His daughters and prepare them for the blessings of eternal life by helping them increase their faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and help those in need.

The Three Tenets of Relief Society are restated here:

  • Increase faith and personal righteousness
  • Strengthen families and homes
  • Help those in need

With this understanding of the ultimate purpose of Relief Society, can we strive to be more effective and Christ-like in our Visiting Teaching? As you visit with your sisters, ask yourself questions pertaining to the three tenets. Questions such as:

  • "Am I helping this sister increase their faith in Jesus Christ and faith in the church?"
  • "Are there concerning issues in this sister's home? How is her personal well being? How are her family relationships? Could she benefit from additional attention or TLC?"
  • "Are their temporal needs that she and her family have? Do they have enough food? Are there any home repair items that the brethren should be made aware of?"

Visiting teaching is an important spiritual responsibility to fulfill. It is not just a monthly visit; it is ministering. Let us watch over and strengthen sisters in their individual needs, both temporal and spiritual.

Sister Frances Beverly Johnson Monson

Sister Frances Beverly Johnson Monson —She was an elect daughter of God, a choice spirit, the devoted wife of President Thomas S. Monson.

Sister Frances Beverly Johnson Monson, wife and companion of President Thomas S. Monson, passed away on May 17th. She was honored in a funeral service May 23 as a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to serving the Lord.

Said President Henry B. Eyring, First Counselor in the First Presidency, “The highest tribute to those who have passed through the veil is not grief but gratitude.  Her talents were many, her love abundant, her character above reproach, and her faith unshakable. President Monson has said of her, ‘There was no chink in her armor; there was no guile in her soul; there was no flaw in her character.’ She was an elect daughter of God, a choice spirit, the devoted wife of President Thomas S. Monson—64 years they have been sweethearts.”
President and Sister Frances Monson, and daughter Ann Dibb

"Sister Monson’s family is grateful for her legacy—a legacy of humility, service, faithfulness, and love", said Ann Monson Dibb daughter of President and Sister Monson.  “It is our hope and prayer that we may live so that someday we too will be welcomed home, our journey completed, encircled into our Lord and Savior’s rest,” she said.

Sister Dibb said her mother was deeply motivated to perform good works because of her deep and abiding love for others. Recounted Dibb, “After my parents married, my mother’s greatest hope was to have children. Tom, Clark, and I are blessed to be their children, my mother’s treasures. Each of us grew up knowing we were deeply loved, and we have many cherished memories.”

Sister Monson deeply loved the gospel of Jesus Christ. “We never doubted her testimony because she lived the gospel in every thought and deed,” Sister Dibb said. “She cheerfully and willingly made many sacrifices in her life because of her faith in and love of the gospel.”

Sister Monson showed her love by being loyal, true, and absolutely devoted to her eternal companion—President Thomas S. Monson. “She enabled my father’s fulfillment of his multiple callings through the years with never a complaint,” Dibb said.

The life of Sister Frances Johnson Monson was grounded in faith, dignity, hard work, and gratitude, President Henry B. Eyring said as he spoke at the conclusion of the funeral.

The service, held in the Tabernacle on Temple Square, was attended by members of the Quorum of the Twelve, other General Authorities, and general auxiliary leaders.

Thought for the Day

Here's a great explanation.....

A daughter is telling her mother how everything is going wrong. She's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her, and her best friend is moving away. Meanwhile her mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack and the daughter says, "Absolutely mom,  I love your cake."

"Here, have some cooking oil," her mother offers.
"Yuck" says her daughter.
"How about a couple raw eggs?"
"Gross, Mom!"
"Would you like some flour then?  Or maybe baking soda?"
"Mom, those are all yucky!", to which the mother replies:

"Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!"

God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when he puts these things all in His order, they always work for good. We just have to trust Him, and eventually they will all make something wonderful!

God is crazy about you. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning. Whenever you want to talk, He will listen. He can live anywhere in the universe and he chose your heart.

Birthday Party Pictures

The Relief Society 171st Birthday Party was a real success and a great time for everyone. It was a Mad Hatter Party and sisters showed their spirit with lots of wild and whacky hats. The table decorations were fun and festive; dinner was delicious and the cake/cupcakes were works of art! We played a fun getting-to-know-you game, sort of like speed dating where we had to share "something cool about yourself". We also had a race to see which team could paint sisters' fingernails the fastest.

Many, many thanks to the "Enrichment Team", Nancy Anderson, Beth Moxley, Tia Langston, Shaena Nelson and Jenny Meyer for a job well done!

Relief Society Birthday Party - This Tuesday

Nancy Anderson as the Mad Hatter
Wear a Crazy Hat!!

Joins us Tuesday evening, March 12th, at 6:30 for the Mad Hatter's Tea Party in celebration of  Relief Society's 171st birthday.

Come at 6:30 PM for dinner and birthday cake, and wear a crazy hat!

Brief Background on Relief Society

Relief Society was founded on March 17th, 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois and has approximately 6 million members in over 170 countries and territories. The Relief Society is often referred to by the church and others as "one of the oldest and largest women's organizations in the world."

The motto of the Relief Society, taken from 1 Corinthians 13:8, is "Charity never faileth". The official purpose of Relief Society is to "prepare women for the blessings of eternal life by helping them increase their faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and help those in need. Relief Society accomplishes these purposes through Sunday gospel instruction, other Relief Society meetings, visiting teaching, and welfare and compassionate service."

This Saturday's RS Event

This Saturday is the Stake Relief Society Humanitarian Service Event.

You don't have to sign up to attend!
Just show up because we would love to have you be involved!

Our plan is to go to Hill Ray and Courtyard nursing homes to visit a dozen or so female senior citizens.
Please join us!
Our sole objective in visiting the seniors is to give them some special attention; it's as simple as that. Through gentle hand massage, fingernail painting and conversation, we hope to give them contact (in touch and friendship) which they may receive less of compared to their younger years before they became widowed and alone.

Come to the Stake Center at 11:00 AM this Saturday  (Feb 16th), enjoy a hosted lunch and orientation, and then we'll head to the nursing homes for visiting, musical numbers and fingernail painting. Our stay at the nursing homes will be one hour in length. We'll be wrapped up at 3:00 PM.

February's Visiting Teaching Message

Converted Unto the Lord

"... Every convert needs three things: a friend, a responsibility, and nurturing with ‘the good word of God’."  President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008)

New sisters of the Church—including Young Women entering Relief Society, sisters returning to activity, and new converts—need the support and friendship of visiting teachers. “Member involvement is vital to convert retention and in bringing less-active members back into full activity,” said Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. “Capture the vision that the Relief Society can become one of the most powerful friendshipping resources we have in the Church. Reach out early to those being taught and reactivated, and love them into the Church through your organization.”

As members of Relief Society, we can help new members learn basic Church practices, such as:
  • Giving a talk.
  • Bearing testimony.
  • Living the law of the fast.
  • Paying tithing and other offerings.
  • Participating in family history work.
  • Performing baptisms and confirmations for their deceased ancestors.
“It takes attentive friends to make new members feel comfortable and welcomed at church,” said Elder Ballard. All of us, but especially visiting teachers, have important responsibilities to establish friendships with new members as a way of helping them become firmly “converted unto the Lord” (Alma 23:6).

From the Scriptures:

From Our History

“With the ever-increasing number of converts,” said President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008), “we must make an increasingly substantial effort to assist them as they find their way. Every one of them needs three things: a friend, a responsibility, and nurturing with ‘the good word of God’ (Moroni 6:4).”

Visiting teachers are in a position to help those they watch over. Friendship often comes first, as it did for a young Relief Society sister who was the visiting teacher of an older sister. They had been slow in building a friendship until they worked side by side on a cleaning project. They became friends, and as they talked about the Visiting Teaching Message, they were both nurtured by “the good word of God.”

President Joseph Fielding Smith (1876–1972) said Relief Society “is a vital part of the kingdom of God on earth and helps its faithful members to gain eternal life in our Father’s kingdom.”

What Can I Do?
  1. Do I pray for my companion and ask that the Spirit will guide us as we minister to our sisters?
  2. In what ways do we serve each sister we watch over so that she knows we truly care about her?

Take me to the Ensign to see the complete message!

Spokane Washington Temple History

"Each holy temple stands as a symbol of our membership in the Church, as a sign of our faith in life after death, and as a sacred step toward eternal glory for us and our families."
—Russell M. Nelson

The Spokane Washington Temple was the 59th operating temple in the world when it was ultimately dedicated in 1999.

The announcement for its construction was made in August of 1998. Ground breaking began just over a year later, in October of 1998. Less than one year later, 52,000 members and non-members alike came to tour the building during its open house in August of 1999.

Dedication: On 21–23rd of  August, 1999, Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Spokane Washington Temple with roughly 16,000 members attending.

Here are several facts about the temple:
     ~ Sits on a 2 acres site
~ Has a granite exterior finish
~ Has two ordinance rooms (two-stage progressive) and two sealing rooms
~ Total Floor Area of 10,700 square feet.

Regional Temples: The Spokane Washington Temple was the second temple built in the state of Washington, following the Seattle Washington Temple (1980). Not long after the Spokane Temple came the Columbia River Washington Temple, in 2001.

The Temple is located in the Veradale suburb of Spokane, located east of the city of Spokane. It serves approximately 50,000 LDS church members who come from Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and Western Montana. The closest temple in Montana is Billings (Montana's only temple). The closest temple in Canada is Vancouver BC. The closes temple in Idaho is Boise.

Spokane Washington Temple, before Moroni
statue was replaced to face westward.
Spire Statue:  A statue of the angel Moroni exists atop most, but not all, LDS temples. It does not always face east, but often does. The symbolism is that Moroni is heralding the return of Jesus Christ, who is to come from the east. In March 2009, nearly a decade after its dedication, the Spokane Washington Temple received a new angel Moroni atop its spire. Instead of facing east as the original statue did, the new statue was positioned facing west—the same orientation as the temple.

Architecture:  Described as a "classic modern, single-spire design," the temple has two progressive ordinance rooms and two sealing rooms.  The Spokane Washington Temple was the first of 38 small temples that were built in an aggressive building cycle using relatively identical models and floor plans. If you look at the other "identical temples", you can see the similarities, yet they are differentiated by minor variations in finish and unique landscaping that is suited for regional climate. These similar temples can be found throughout the united states, as well as Australia, Mexico, Quebec, Fiji, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Worldwide Facts & Statistics

Taking a Look at the Numbers.....

At General Conference in April of 2012, the First Presidency issued a statistical report of the Church as of December 31, 2011. This data is now a year old, but still very interesting. Presumably, a similar report will be issued for 2012 statistics at the upcoming April 2013 General Conference. At that time, it will be interesting to compare the 2011 statistics to the year 2012.

Humanitarian Service Activity

STAKE RELIEF SOCIETY HUMANITARIAN SERVICE ACTIVITY
Sisters Make Plans to Visit Area Nursing Homes on Valentine's Weekend.

For our upcoming Stake Relief Society Humanitarian Service Activity, we are going to be meeting on Feb. 16th at 11:00 at the Stake center for a lunch and short program. Then we will be leaving to go to different nursing homes where we will sing to the patrons and paint their nails or curl their hair depending on the nursing home.

We will pamper the patrons and give them chocolates in hopes of letting them know that they are not forgotten. The Stake RS Presidency chose the weekend of Valentine's on purpose as the seniors have most likely lost their sweethearts.

We are also making plans to visit home bound sisters in the Colfax Ward on this day as part of the event.

The Relief Society Presidency will be receiving official invitations from the Stake Presidency in the near future. We will hand them out to all sisters during church. All sisters in Relief Society will be given one, and someone will be appointed to make the rounds and distribute invitations to the Primary, Y.W. and Nursery classes.

SAVE THE DATE!
February 16th
11:00AM
 Stake Center, Moscow ID

Thank you for your help and willingness to serve. We will bring warmth and joy to the hearts of seniors on the day of our Service Activity.
