May 4th Lesson Overview

Mother's Day Presentation
by Kelsey Livingston

Welcome to Relief Society
Keep Trying. Be Believing. Be Happy.
Don't Get Discouraged. Everything
Will Work Out -Gordon B. Hinkley

Honoring Women
  • Not here to honor motherhood as much as to honor the pain we feel surrounding Mother's Day.
  • Anyone can say Happy Mother's Day.
  • Who ask's, "Why is it painful?"
  • Who says, " I am sorry; It's hard for me too."
For Whom is Mother's Day Hard?
The " Outside Category"
  • Those who are unmarried
  • Those with no children
  • are infertile
  • whose children have died
  • Adoptees
  • Adopted out
  • Career choices
  • Feel judged for being childless
For Whom is Mother's Day Hard?
The "Inside Category"
  • Children are estranged / mothers are estranged
  • Divorce / widower
  • Mothers who feel inadequate
  • Some feel like natural nurturers
  • Feel inadequate compared to church contemporaries
  • Not all women find happiness in motherhood
Quit Beating Yourself Up
  • If we compare ourselves to other Mormon women walking the halls of the church building, Satan has destined us for feelings of anguish and failure
  • God does not judge or compare us against anyone else. He compares us against our own potential given the current circumstances in which we live.
Celebrate Nurturing
  • To nurture: To cultivate, care for , make grow
  • All women have a nurturing quality that they bless the world with, whether or not they impart that with their own offspring.
  • Sheri Dew: " Women are the regenerating force in the lives of God's children."
Elder John A. Widtsoe
  • "Women who through no fault of their own cannot exercise the gift of motherhood directly, may do so vicariously."
  • All around us are those who need to be loved and led
  • The blessings of Church Callings
To the right is Kelsey's Very First Calling.....

"What we celebrate about mothers is much more than a biological link. It's the desire to connect with others, to love and help other people. It's caring that helps a women enrich the lives of people around them"

Mother's Day Gift
  • Flowers and chocolates are nice but...
  • Forgive - Self and others
  • Forgive yourself, Because when your feel guilt, sorrow and pain, your Heavenly Parents feel it too.
Try for a moment to see
ourselves as God sees us -
as loved children, regardless of our age

To the right is a picture of Kelsey and her Mom.
I believe taken at her Mom and Dads 60th Wedding Anniversary this year.

You are truly a royal spirit daughter of almighty
God. You are a princess, destined to become a queen. Your own wondrous story has already begun. Your " once upon a time" is now.

Welcome Carolyn Arnett into the Ward Family. It's always a very happy day
when we can welcome another sister into the Relief Society. Please make sure when you see
Carolyn (Tracy Mathia's mom) you say hi and welcome her to the Ward.

Welcome Sarah Mortensen into the Ward Family. So glad to have more friends and families in the Ward.  Please welcome the Mortensens into the Ward.

Thank you for the out pouring of meals for the Stoner family.

The Relief Society would like to extend a request to you. I know that we have spent quite a bit of time taking meals to the Stoner's and you may be tired of hearing about it, but I am going to extend this request to you one more time.

To make a short request a bit longer, I would like to share a bit of her story so you can keep tabs on what is going on.

Carol has been battling cancer for quite some time. She was doing chemo and while that has had battles all on it's own, she has also been hit with a fractured leg, an overdose on pain medication and the realities that her cancer has spread and she now has a brain tumor. She was sent to a nursing home to try to recover when she decided she just wanted to be home so she could pass away in the peace that her home provides.

The doctors have only given her a short time to live and due to this, we need to work together to help Harry out during this awful time. Lets help support him so he doesn't have to worry about one more thing while he is watching his wife deteriorate and slip away.

I need the following days filled up. Lets shower this couple with love and kindness so they have one less thing to worry about and can focus on each other.

*Please remember that there are only 2 of them and that simple meals are best as Carol is still battling nausea. NOTE: Carol does love home canned peaches. :)*

Lesson Overview
" General Conference"
Given by Michelle Hubert
In our dispensation, the Savior Jesus Christ referred ti a gathering of Saints as "my general conference." Wherever we are in this world, however we receive these proceedings, I testify that we are gathered in His conference. I also testify that we will hear His word, for He has said, " Whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same."
From: General Conference:Strengthening Faith and Testimony
                                                               by Elder Robert D. Hales

Today is not different from ages past. The Lord does not love the people of our day any less than in past times. One of the glorious messages of the Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ is that God continues to speak to His children! He is not hidden in the heavens but speaks today as He did in ancient days.
Much of what the Lord reveals to His prophets is intended to prevent sorrow for us as individuals and as societies. When God speaks. He does so to teach, inspire, refine, and warn His children. When individuals and societies ignore their Heavenly Father's instructions, they do so at risk of trial, torment, and toil.
From: Why Do We Need Prophets?
                                          by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Members of the Church are entitled to personal revelation as they listen to and study the inspired words spoken at General Conference.
As you prepare for General Conference, I invite you to ponder questions you need to have answered. For example, you might yearn for direction and guidance by the Lord regarding challenges you are facing.
Answers to your specific prayers may come directly from a particular talk or from a specific phrase. at other times answers may come in a seemingly unrelated word, phrase, or song. A heart filled with gratitude for the blessings of the life and an earnest desire to hear and follow the words of the counsel will prepare the way for personal revelation.
From: General Conference- No Ordinary Blessing
                                                                      by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf

The greatest blessings of General Conference come to us after the conference is over. Remember the pattern recorded frequently n scripture:  "we gather to hear the words of the Lord, and we return to our homes to live them."
After King Benjamin taught his people, "he dismissed the multitude, and they returned, every one according to their families, to their own houses,"  In his day, King Limhi did the dame. After teaching and ministering to the people at the temple in Bountiful, the Savior entreated the people, " Go ye unto your homes, and ponder upon the things which I have said, and ask of the Father, in my name, that ye may understand, and prepare your minds for the morrow, and I come unto you again."
From: General Conference: Strengthening Faith and Testimony

Lesson overview
The Significance of the Sacrament.
   by Janet Nastasi
Question to ponder " What did Jesus  do for me?"

Joseph Fielding Smith Said,
" In my judgement the sacrament meeting is the most sacred, the most holy,
of all the meeting of the Church. When I reflect upon the gathering of the Savior and his apostles on that memorable night when he introduced the sacrament; when I think
of that solemn occasion my heart is filled with wonderment and my feelings are touched. I consider that gathering one of the most solemn and wonderful sinse the beginning of time.
What do you think about or do during the Sacrament?
  • our baptismal covenants
  • our temple covenants
  • read Sacrament hymns
  • pray to better yourselves in the upcoming week
  • remind ourselves that because of the Sacrament we can have hope and not dread our mistakes.
Sacrament meeting is the one meeting that we are commanded to attended.
Is it possible to be perfect enough to not add more to the burden that Christ bore?
  • No , but we should always strive to.
  • The Atonement is also for the relief of grief or pain etc. Who hasn't experienced pain or grief?
  • The Atonement is an amazing healing tool that was designed to share our burden and that it's okay to have peace and comfort during hard times.
Blessings of the Atonement
  • During times of struggle it's easy to always look within yourself and focus only on ourselves...
  •  when we know that Christ shares our burden, it's easy to focus our attention away from ourselves and onto our family and friends, etc.
  • gratitude for small blessings around us
  • clarity in knowing that there is so much waiting for us in the life hereafter.
LETS TURN OUR THOUGHTS TO THE SAVIOR AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE DURING SACRAMENT .

" O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them.
Amen."
"O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them, that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit with them. Amen."

Lesson Overview
"FAITH AND REPENTANCE"
AND FORGIVENESS

Faith is the foundation of righteousness.
" What we need in the Church, as well as out of it, is repentance.
We need more faith and more determination to serve the Lord."                                                                                                         -D&C 18:10-16
We are not walking now by sight, as we did before we came into this world,
but the Lord expects that we shall walk by faith [2 corinth 5:7] ; and walking by faith
we shall receive the reward of the righteous, if we adhere to those commandments which are given for our salvation.
Repentance is the second principle of the gospel and is essential to our salvation exaltation. In the principle of repentance, the mercy of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ is made manifest. Repentance is the one most comforting and glorious principles taught in the gospel. In the principle the mercy of our Heavenly Father anf his Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, is made manifest perhaps more strongly than in any other principle.
Repentance includes sincere sorrow for sin and complete turning from sin.
The scriptures say:
" Thou shalt offer a sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in righteousness, even that of a broken
heart and a contrite spirit."     -[D&C 59:8]
          That means repentance.
... Repentance, according to the definition given in the dictionary, is sincere sorrow for sin
with self-condemnation, and complete turning from the sin... there can be no true repentance
without sorrow and the desire to be freed from sin.

Think of and example in your own life where you have exercised faith or repentance or even forgiveness..
What does it mean to you?   How has it effected your life?  How has it changed your life?

"TO COMFORT THOSE WHO STAND IN NEED OF COMFORT"
lesson given by Betina Workman
The Maggie's
Look through each other's lens. You just might learn who people really are inside and out.
And Ponder this question Ladies.
"Who knows ALL your Maggie's?"
CHIEKO OKASAKI QUOTE           "Atonement and Diversity in the Church."
Mosiah 18:8-9
  • And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another's burdens, that they may be light;
  • Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life--
"God does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs. Therefore, it is vital that we serve each other in the kingdom. The people of the Church need each other's strength, support, and leadership in a community of believers as an enclave of disciples."

Empathy:(DR. BRENE BROWN)
  • "Knowing our darkness well enough that we can sit in the dark with others. It is never a relationship between the wounded and the healed. Its a relationship between equals."
  • "No one reaches out to you for compassion or empathy so you can teach them how to behave better."
Empathy: A learned Skill
  • Understanding another's experience through their lens.
  • Their lens is as true and valid as mine
  • Non-Judgmental - we always judge in areas where we are vulnerable to shame, and we pick people who are doing worse than we are doing.
  • Understand another's feelings
  • Communicate our understanding of those feelings
  • Reflect back in our face what they are saying with their words

LESSON
presented by Michelle Hubert

" I'VE FALLEN AND I CAN'T GET UP!"

Skiing with his grandson, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf fell and found himself unable to get up.
“I began to wonder what it would take to rescue me,” related President Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency, in his priesthood session address. “That was when my grandson came to my side. I told him what had happened, but he didn’t seem very interested in my explanations of why I couldn’t get up. He looked me in the eyes, reached out, took my hand, and in a firm tone said, ‘Opa, you can do it now!
“Instantly I stood.
“I am still shaking my head over this. What had seemed impossible only a moment before immediately became reality, because a 12-year-old boy reached out to me and said, ‘You can do it now!’ To me it was an infusion of confidence, enthusiasm and strength.”
Drawing a lesson from the experience, President Uchtdorf said to the priesthood session congregation that there may be times in one’s life when rising up and continuing on may seem beyond one’s ability.
“Sometimes we just need someone to look us in the eyes, take our hand and say, ‘You can do it now!’” he remarked.
He added, “Brethren, our destiny is not determined by the number of times we stumble but by the number of times we rise up, dust ourselves off and move forward.”
“That does not mean that we should be comfortable with our weaknesses, mistakes or sins. No,” he said. “And there is an important difference between the sorrow for sin that leads to repentance and the sorrow that leads to despair.”
When guilt leads to self-loathing, it impedes rather than promotes repentance, he said.
“Let us rise up and become men of God. We have a champion, a Savior, who walked through the valley of the shadow of death on our behalf. He gave Himself a ransom for our sins. No one has ever had greater love than this – Jesus Christ, the Lamb without blemish, willingly laid Himself on the altar of sacrifice and paid the price for our sins to the ‘uttermost farthing.’”
My dear brethren, my dear friends, there will be times when you think you cannot continue on. Trust the Savior and His love. With faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and the power and hope of the restored gospel, you will be able to walk tall and continue on.
The Latter Day Saint's view a fall as an ascent not a step backwards. It's all part of the learning process.
